A prominent western historian, a leading expert of the Wild West, has released a new volume titled Brothers of the Gun, which examines the stories of the famed lawman and Doc Holliday. The historian states frustration with the famous saying from a classic movie: “When the legend becomes fact, print the myth.”

“All researcher cites it, they just beat it to death,” the author comments happily. “And it’s really not correct. I composed a story. I aim people to be engaged in the era, but I just get so weary of that line. The myth is myth. It never become truth. People can recount the folklore but it won't make it reality.”

That Famous Showdown at the Corral

In the town of Tombstone, on the 26th of October, 1881, Wyatt Earp and Holliday were involved in a shootout that is remembered as the O.K. Corral shootout. With Earp’s brothers, the duo faced the Cowboys, individuals hunted for robbery and rustling. In under 60 seconds, three gang members were killed and Holliday was injured, as were his companions.

Although being one of countless Wild West conflicts between authorities and criminals, it joined legend, largely thanks to classic films including My Darling Clementine and the Sturges movie.

Confusion and Variation in Firsthand Accounts

“A great deal of what we learn about it is provable,” the historian said of the real shootout and its sequels. “But I always go back to one of the most telling quotes, and it’s a very plain comment. An observer, who observed the confrontation, stated: ‘I don’t know. It was all a blur.’”

Even the people present had different versions. Statements from the investigation is likewise confusing. Observers who were associates of the outlaws were dishonest, and all version is slightly unique. It’s infrequent when somebody agrees on anything.

“We do not know why he kept it,” Gardner says. “He escapes, and arrives in the frontier. He’s apprehended for taking a horse, and then he’s in Illinois, and he’s operating a brothel. Eventually he travels back out West, and he settles in a booming town.”

Regardless of his checkered background, Wyatt shone as a peace officer. Newspapers praised him frequently. In one case, he apprehended a drunk man who had $500 on him. He held the money for the individual and handed it back when he let go him from jail.

Contrasting Natures of the Pair

He points out the sharp distinction between the pair. Earp was driven, wanting to advance himself and achieve roles like county sheriff. Holliday, hailing in the South in the mid-19th century, was a professional turned gambler. In contrast to Wyatt, Holliday never show signs of settling down.

“He just travels from one boomtown to the following,” he observes. “He won't actually evolve. And a portion of that’s his obsession to betting. A portion of that is tuberculosis, coping with that and self-medicating, whether it’s with alcohol or subsequently laudanum.”

Legacy and Historical Significance

This volume demonstrates a compelling element of the old west: the tension between order and chaos, and the endeavors of authorities to establish order over newly forming societies. The amount of procedure that followed a gunfight – inquiries, testimonies, directives for restitution – might startle those familiar with simplified portrayals of the period.

Additionally, Earp and Doc were entangled in divisive political struggles. Earp was a member of the GOP, while local sheriff his rival was a opponent, creating a conflict for influence and authority.
