California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.
Following 25 long years, no portion of California is enduring dryness. This significant achievement comes on the heels of difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated blaze threats and challenged its massive agricultural sector.
A Map Reveals No Drought
Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that all of California is clear of dry or drought conditions. This development resulted from multiple heavy precipitation that replenished key lakes like the state's largest lakes exceeding their historic averages.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a weather expert.
Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations
The path to this point featured powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and deaths. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Even into late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those remaining dry spots.
A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge
But, authorities caution that being out of drought is not the same as being out of the woods. Latest data of the high-elevation snow show it at roughly seven-tenths of the average for this date.
This frozen reservoir, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for the year ahead. Hydrology managers stress that it is not yet time to make predictions for the coming year.
“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
While the drought map indicates no dryness, the next challenge is to maintaining this precious water balance for the coming seasons.
